Make sure to clear hips

-

Today I’m going to show you a great practice drill that will help create more space at impact by clearing your hips more efficiently, resulting in powerful and accurate golf shots.

One of the most common faults I see with amateur golfers is when they hit at the ball too much with their hands on the downswing, leaving their hips behind, causing them to get trapped at impact.

Today’s exercise will help you initiate the downswing more with your hips and torso creating space in which to swing your club.

Firstly, sit your ball on a low tee holding the club in your right hand only. With your left hand, you should take hold of your right trouser pocket or belt. Now swing back to around shoulder high ensuring that you turn your shoulders in time with your arm swing (step 1).

To initiate your downswing you should pull on your right hip with your left hand, which will initiate correct sequencing and the rest of your body will naturally follow.

When you reach impact position, your hips will have opened to target and you will have space in which to swing the club (step 2). This will allow you to make a full and complete follow through (step 3).

When you attempt this exercise at first you may find it hard to strike the ball correctly - or at all!
