COVID-19 hub closes as cases in the region fall

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

The COVID-19 community assessment hub in Perth has been stood down as cases of the virus continue to fall.

The hub was set up at PRI in March as the fight against the pandemic intensified.

Three other hubs across the NHS Tayside region have also been stood down, with the regional hub at Kings Cross in Dundee remaining.

Residents are also being told they can be assessed by their own GP.

NHS Tayside says it has been working closely with local GP practices to allow them to see patients with COVID-like symptoms.

GP surgeries have been encouraged to set up dedicated isolation areas to assess patients, who may have coronavirus, and these are now in place in many practices.

Medical director Professor Peter Stonebridge said:“This move is in line with the Scottish Government’s route map to recovery.

“Our assessment hubs have been seeing very few patients each day, which is why we have taken the decision to move to the next phase of our coronavirus response.

“By enabling GP practices to see patients with COVID-like symptoms, this allows GPs to maintain continuity of care for their patients, which is known to improve overall outcomes.

“We would like to reassure the people of Tayside that plans are in place to step our community assessment centres back up should coronavirus infection rates increase.”

At least 70 people have died in Perth and Kinross from the coronavirus.
