Community food share shop

-

A new volunteer-run community food share opened in south Perth yesterday (July 20) to reduce waste and help tackle food poverty.

The South Perth Community Food Share at Moncreiffe Community Hall on Glenearn Road will be open on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11am to 1.30pm.

Supported by Letham4All, it will provide food and produce, sanitary products, and information about support networks.

A four-week pilot will identify whether this benefits the community and how it can become a permanent service. Organiser Liz Barrett said: “The South Perth Community Food Share is all about reducing food waste and protecting the environment.

“We are open to everybody and I’m aiming to replicate the excellent Food Share projects operating in Letham, Tulloch and Muirton for the benefit of local residents.”

Ms Barrett continued: “We are hugely grateful to Perth and Kinross Council, Live Active Leisure, People With A Mission Ministries and especially Letham4All for really great support in setting this up.

“I think there is a tremendous opportunity to work together to develop an effective food network across Perth and tackle concerns about people struggling with the impacts of the lockdown, and the spate of redundancies.

“We think this food share will especially benefit people in Friarton and Moncreiffe who might have difficulty getting into town for help or cheap food.

“I’m asking local residents in Moncreiffe, Friarton and Craigie to please come and help, and to try out the food share in the next few weeks.

“And if I’m not chancing my arm, if any reader could help provide a display fridge for chilled meals, that would be fantastic.”
