Richard Lochhead, Scotland’s university minister, has said: “It is with a heavy heart we have taken the difficult decision to end free education for new EU students from the academic year 2021-22, as a consequenc­e of Brexit”.

Students living in Scotland who were previously unable to secure a place will be delighted. No heavy heart for them.

Mr Lochhead says that the Scottish Government spends around £20 million a year to cover the fees of between 15,000 and 21,000 EU students.
