Night out at pub ended in violence

- COURT REPORTER

A works night out in a Perth city centre pub ended in violence when a reveller decked a complete stranger he believed had been harassing some of the females in their group.

The assault led to 31-year-old Guy Williams, of Hilltop, Dunkeld, being ejected from The Venue - and he was also fined £600 at Perth Sheriff Court.

He admitted punching Andrew Morgan on the head in the St John Street establishment on November 9, 2019, causing him to fall to the floor.

A not guilty plea was accepted to a second charge of pulling Matthew Hamilton by the body to the floor, to his injury.

Depute fiscal Bill Kermode told the court: “The complainer and the accused aren’t known to each other.”

About 1am, Mr Hamilton and Mr Morgan were standing at the side of the dance floor watching the dancing when there was a “scuffle.”

“During that, the accused threw a punch at Mr Morgan which caused him to fall to the floor,” Mr Kermode said.

Staff then intervened to de-escalate the incident and Mr Morgan later attended at

PRI, complaining of a sore jaw.

Solicitor Pauline Cullerton said there had been a works night out at The Venue, attended by the accused, colleagues and some females.

“Mr Williams was told that Mr Morgan had been harassing some of the females.

“He threw a punch, causing Mr Morgan to fall to the floor.”

The accused was subsequently “thrown out” of the nightspot.

Imposing the fine, Sheriff Gillian Wade told Williams, a first offender: “It’s very unfortunate, at your age and stage in life, you appear in court on an assault.

“You will have that assault on your record from now on.”

He was allowed three months to pay the penalty.
