Student welfare aid funding welcomed
The president of Perth College UHI student association has welcomed additional funding promised by the Scottish Government for vital student welfare aid.
The £750,000 will help NUS Scotland (National Union of Students) and student associations across the country build online student communities, increase membership engagement and develop public health and wellbeing messaging.
It will also go towards helping further provide support for students - in particular international students - who will be remaining in accommodation or who are experiencing isolation over the winter break and build the capacity of college associations.
NUS Scotland and student associations will work closely with their institutions to ensure these activities complement those funded by the additional £1.32 million in this financial year for student mental health support announced by the First Minister last month.
HISA Perth president Alex Wilson said: “HISA Perth, alongside the Highlands and Islands Students’ Association as a whole, is incredibly excited at the announcement from the Scottish Government regarding additional funding for Students’ Associations.
“This news gives recognition to the work that is going on across the sector and highlights the obstacles HISA have overcome, through what has been one of our most challenging years yet.
“This additional funding will enable us to better support our students throughout these unprecedented times, helping us to deliver increased mental health provisions and more inclusive and accessible events in coordination with Perth College UHI.”
Matt Crilly, NUS Scotland President, added: “NUS Scotland is delighted the Scottish Government has answered our call for financial support for Scotland’s student associations. The work they carry out for our students is invaluable – especially in the current climate. Student associations don’t just put on great social events and activities, they are a lifeline for many students.”
