School has a fair view on litter...

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Perth’s Fairview School has picked up the top prize in a nationwide social media video competition run by litter education resource Bin It!

The competition invited students to submit entries demonstrating how they help tackle the impact of littering on our environment.

Teachers and pupils from the Fairview eco group worked together to make their winning video using different sports equipment including a curling brush, golf clubs and a skateboard to bin rubbish from around the school.

The Bin It Your Way competition, hosted on Twitter, attracted entries from across the UK, but Fairview’s video racked up the most likes to secure the prize of £500 of sports equipment for the school.

Mr Hill, Fairview School’s eco coordinator, said: “The eco group are very aware of litter on campus and are a credit to their school.

“The pupils had fun making the video. Their participation was great.

“They all chose a piece of sports equipment they liked and performed well. They were delighted to win as were the eco staff members too.

“It was a lovely surprise and another reason to celebrate success

Fairview School scooped a nationwide award for their efforts

at Fairview School during this most difficult of years.”

Bin It! is an award-winning antilitter educational roadshow, funded by Mars Wrigley, which normally visits around 240 schools per year

David Henderson, senior public affairs manager at Mars Wrigley, said: “COVID-19 restrictions have meant we can’t visit schools with our Bin It! roadshow this year.

“But through the Bin It! Your Way competition we’ve been able to remotely engage with schools and remind teachers and students of the importance of putting litter in the bin.

“It’s been a tough year for

everyone and we wanted to inject a bit of fun while still promoting anti-litter behaviour among young people.

“Fairview’s video was a joy to watch and I could tell they had all put a lot of hard work into creating it. A very worthy winner.”

Tackling the issue of litter is a regular activity for the Fairview eco group.

The group holds weekly litter picking around the school campus and promotes anti-littering behaviour to all pupils.

Last term posters were put up around the campus highlighting the litter problem with the slogan:

Don’t drop litter, it makes us bitter. Put it in the bin and we can win.

Next term, the eco group has plans to litter pick at a local park.

Pete Wishart, MP for Perth and North Perthshire, congratulated all involved at Fairview.

He told the PA: “I was delighted to see that Fairview School won the Bin It! Your Way challenge for their fantastic video.

“Their passion and commitment to looking after the environment is really inspiring. They are role models for young people across Perthshire, as we all work together to tackle litter in our community.”
