Create width for more yards

-

Although now in winter season, it’s important that you continue to work on your game even if you are not going to get out on the course quite as much.

Today’s exercise can be done at home or on the driving range and will help you create more width and power.

Firstly, make your address position and grip the club with your top hand in its normal position, but with your lower hand grasping the bottom of the grip and the club shaft.

You should hover your club head six to 12 inches off the ground (picture 1). Now swing to the top of your backswing keeping your left arm straight and trying to really feel the big muscles of your shoulders and torso stretch (picture 2).

By splitting your hands on the grip, it forces your right shoulder to fully turn and helps maintain the width of your swing arc.

When your shoulders fail to turn in time with the arm swing, this leads to a folding of the left arm and a collapsed position at the top (picture 3). Power and accuracy will be lost from this position.

Swing through to a complete finish and, when done correctly, you should again feel the big muscles stretching.
