Pensioner fined for wrecking spree in prison recreation area

A pensioner on remand overnight at Perth prison caused hundreds of poundswort­h of damage during a wrecking spree in the recreation area.

Perth Sheriff Court was told that Stuart Ross (67) pulled down a number of ceiling panels and smashed several perspex window panels as he aimed a kick at them.

Depute fiscal Bill Kermode said that the cost of the repairs totalled £673.

His actions were witnessed by a prison officer and were also caught on CCTV.

He was fined £750 after pleading guilty to causing wilful or reckless damage at the Edinburgh Road jail on June 28 last year.

Solicitor David Holmes said the accused’s mental health hadn’t been good and he had been receiving treatment at the Carseview Centre in Dundee just before he was remanded.

Ross, of Weaver’s Yard, Dundee, was allowed 28 days to pay the fine from his savings.
