Car accident cuts off power to 250 homes

-

Over 250 homes near the Kinross-shire border lost power when a car ended up on its roof down an embankment after colliding with electricity wires.

The female driver had a lucky escape after the silver Vauxhall left the B9097 road near Loch Leven on Monday morning as icy conditions blighted the region.

All four people involved in the incident miraculously walked away without serious injury.

Emergency services were called to the scene near the RSPB Vane Farm, only five miles from Kinross, at around 10am on January 4.

Officers from the Tayside Police division were forced to close the road after electricity wires were damaged during the accident.

The silver car landed just a few yards from holiday cottages that hug the busy road.

It is understood that no one was seriously injured during the incident.

A police spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a crash involving a single car on B9097 near Loch Leven between the junction with the B920 and B996 around 10.05am on Monday, January 4.

“The vehicle struck a power line and the road was closed to allow the line to be made safe.

“The ambulance service was contacted to check on the female driver and the vehicle has been recovered.”

The incident left 253 properties in the area without power for several hours.

A SSE spokesperson said: “The vehicle striking the power line did result in a power cut, causing the power to go off to 253 properties.

“On the rare occasions the power goes off, our priority is to restore our customers’ supplies as safely and as quickly as possible.”

The energy company restored power to 229 properties by around 2.30pm on Monday and engineers restored power to the remaining 24 homes by the early evening.
