Takeaway returns to helping the isolated mark their special days

- MELANIE BONN

A Perth takeaway is back trying to make life better for local residents who are shielding.

During the March lockdown Pete Chan, owner of China China at Craigie Cross, asked for the public to nominate those who would not be able to celebrate a special occasion with friends and family because of restricted movement.

He granted wishes to send them a free Chinese meal, delivered to their home, so their special day didn’t go unmarked.

Having paused this kind gesture when everything lightened up for several months of‘new normal’, Pete and his crew are now back to the deliveries of hot food treats for the elderly.

Around Christmas the nomination process restarted and Pete contacted Adele Frampton from the Facebook page Coronorvirus In Perthshire Support Group.

The delivery service took one day off on Christmas Day and one day off on New Year’s Day, otherwise the food went out nightly to people who had birthdays or anniversaries who were stuck in their homes.

“All the nominees are given to Adele who just gives me the meal requests and addresses every evening,”explained Pete, who in the past has dressed up as Batman to give hot food to nurses and doctors at PRI.

“Most evenings, we will cater for two to three households.

“Adele is the one that makes the magic work. She makes sure we deliver on special days, such as birthdays and anniversaries.”

In the last week China China food has helped to mark a 79th birthday and an even older one, someone who turned 97, just the day before that.

Pete added: “This early evening we catered for a gentleman who lives on his own, who is celebrating his 97th birthday. It’s not often we get to cater for such a special birthday and to keep the‘feel good factor’ going.”

Pete wished to keep the relationship going and offered to make the same senior citizen a birthday tea every year to see him through to turning 100.
