RATTRAY
On Monday, January 18 president Muriel Brown welcomed 21 members to a virtual meeting on Zoom. She informed members that Rattray SWI had won the Lumsden Quaich – the prize for the best syllabus in the federation.
The speaker was Mary Birch, chairman of Blair in Bloom who presented a slide show of its work in 2020. In January and February there was tidying up and litter picking. In February the annual quiz raised funds as did a pop-up shop in Blairgowrie.
She showed good displays of crocuses and daffodils in spring. Lockdown made activities more difficult. In May sunflower seed kits for children were donated to the community larder. In spite of the difficulties beautiful displays of flowers were achieved in the town centre, at the riverside and at the herbaceous border at Ardblair.
In the autumn more bulbs were planted in various locations around the town. The work on Coronation Corner began in October.
Some planting was done by December including the replanting of the SWI tree. Afterwards members were invited to ask gardening questions. The main topic was the growing of tomatoes inScotland. Kathleen Mc Cormick gave the vote of thanks.
Members showed items of royal memorabilia and talked about them. They included Mugs from jubilees and weddings, a serviette form the royal yacht, a coronation coin, a souvenir coronation programme, a book of coronation cuttings and knitted figures from William and Catherine’s wedding.
Finallly members showed their flowers of the month. Greer Oliver had a beautiful potted miniature rose which has been in bloom since November.
Muriel wished everyone well and reminded members that the next meeting is on Monday, February 15. The speaker is Meg Luckins who will give a talk entitled “A spin along the River Ericht”.
