Today’s exercise will prepare putting stroke for the summer

-

Regardless of how good a putter you are, your stroke will alter over the winter months due to the ground conditions.

During the winter period when the grass is longer and the surface a little uneven, your stroke will become a little shorter, steeper and sometimes“stabby”on the follow through.

Summer putting requires a much smoother stroke where your club head remains very close to the ground on the backswing then strikes up on the ball on the way through, creating topspin and a true roll.

Today’s exercise will help prepare your putting stroke for the summer season and involves you putting whilst holding the club in the right hand only, which is a great way to help you learn the desired movement.

Set up in your normal position but with your left arm behind your back (pic 1). When you swing back holding the putter solely in your right hand, you will find it quite easy to keep the putter head low to the ground (pic 2).

This low backswing will help to promote an upwards strike on the ball and a truer roll (pic 3).

You can see that my backswing and through swing are equidistant but that my putter head is much lower to the ground on the way back.
