Coffee chain bringing 35-40 jobs to Perth

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

A major global coffee chain often referred to as the ‘Canadian Starbucks’ will be setting up shop in Perth, creating 35-40 jobs.

Toronto-based Tim Hortons has been given the go-ahead on plans that have been brewing for a vacant spot in St Catherine’s Retail Park.

The Perth outlet will serve up both a sit-in and a 24-hour drive-through service.

Plans for the setup first filtered through to Perth and Kinross Council in November, before official planning permission was granted by the local authority last week.

Tim Hortons, famous for its hot drinks and doughnuts, stated that each store typically employs more than 100 people from pre-construction to the completion phase.

The company has also stirred up some excitement adding that between 35 and 40 new staff jobs will be created.

The location was previously occupied by Italian-American diner chain Frankie and Benny’s, whose parent company The Restaurant Group announced in July 2020 that it would not be reopening having been closed since lockdown began in March.

In its planning statement, Tim Hortons said the plans would “bring back into use a vacant unit within a prominent location”.

It added: “Drive-thru restaurants encourage social distancing and are a fantastic way for restaurant businesses to remain financially viable during the current pandemic.

“Tim Hortons is Canada’s number one coffee shop brand with over 4500 stores across the country.

“Over the past three years, the brand has expanded rapidly in the UK and there are now 12 stores in Scotland alone, with additional stores in the pipeline.

“Tim Hortons’ focus is on great quality food and coffee available throughout the day and evening.

“All of the food available can be taken off the premises for consumption.

“[The project would be] bringing back into use a vacant unit within a prominent location in St Catherine’s Retail Park and adjacent to Dunkeld Road.

“[The shop would] contribute towards the Perth and Kinross economy through provision of increased employment opportunities, investment in the local area, commitment to training and development, and re-use of a vacant site.”
