Huge global audience for Burns Night
A Perthshire school was broadcasting piping, poetry and prose for Burns Night to a worldwide audience yesterday, coming close to the 2000 mark for how many had viewed it.
Strathallan School in Forgandenny took the decision to host its annual Burns Supper online this year and the move proved popular.
Thousands of viewers from across the globe went onto YouTube to celebrate the Bard with pupils.
Taking the proceedings forward was Xander G, one of the headmaster’s pipers, playing ‘Scotland The Brave’.
Head of rugby Andrew Henderson went on to address the haggis.
And fourth form pupil Mischa S sang a lovely version of‘Ae Fond Kiss’.
The 30-minute video was initially created to help Strathallan families celebrate Burns Night, but the video attracted viewers from as far afield as Saudi Arabia, Canada and Germany.
Aileen Wilson, alumni and external relations manager at Strathallan, organised the event. She was amazed at how many views there had been.
“We’ve been toasting Robbie Burns at Strathallan for as long as I can remember so we couldn’t imagine not having a Burns Night.
“Taking it online this year has allowed us to continue a significant tradition for the school but it has also meant we could include more amazing performances and share the wonderful talent of our pupils and staff with anyone who wants to celebrate Burns.”
