Online movie night will focus on dancer
Perth Film Society (PFS) is gathering members and anyone who would like to try a quality new movie for a screen night on February 11.
For Christmas 2020 PFS experimented with an online event. Feedback was good and prompted the society to try a home-based gathering again.
“Our lovely audience supported it and, from the feedback we received, clearly enjoyed it,”said Jill Moody of PFS.“So our New Year’s resolution for 2021 has been‘must do more’.
“Horsecross and Cinema For All are supporting us again, though this time, we must charge a small download fee of £3 per device to cover our costs.
“Virtual tickets will be available soon from the Horsecross online box office.
“As before, you won’t need any special software to view the film and, at approximately 5pm on the day of the screening, anyone who has pre-booked a ticket will be sent an email with joining instructions and links.
“The film will start at approximately 7.30pm and may be viewed at that specific time only by using links that are not transferable.
“So what’s the film? Well almost exactly a year ago PFS was planning to screen‘Yuli’in our spring season, but events took hold, and we were forced to abandon it.
“We thought it would be the perfect choice for our new online 2021 adventure.”
Yuli: The Carlos Acosta Story is certificate 15 and lasts 115 minutes. It is filmed in Spanish and English with subtitles.
Directed by Iciar Bollain (‘Even the Rain’and‘The Olive Tree’, enjoyed by PFS in spring 2013 and spring 2018), and written by her husband Paul Laverty (‘I Daniel Blake’,‘The Angel’s Share’and most recently‘Sorry We Missed You’), Yuli is the biopic of world famous Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta.
But you do not have to love ballet or dance to appreciate this fine film. Acosta is known equally for the stunning athleticism and emotional depth of his performances, and some of his riveting dance sequences are woven skilfully into the film, making it a truly compelling watch.
Born in 1973, the 11th child in a poor family in Cuba, Yuli progressed to become the first black dancer in some of the most prestigious ballet roles in top rank companies such as the Royal Ballet.
