Lily does a bit Moore

Cancer fighter honours NHS fundraiser with her own effort

Sir Tom Moore captured the hearts of the nation

Brave Perth cancer fighter Lily Douglas has been inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore to take on her own charity challenge.

The 13-year-old has been battling Ewing’s sarcoma for the past four years. The disease spread to her brain and left her paralysed.

And despite not having walked since last year, she is determined to get on her feet to honour the man who touched the nation’s hearts.

Captain Sir Tom, who died on Tuesday at the age of 100, helped raise over £38 million for

NHS charities by walking laps of his garden.

And Lily is now also wanting to do her bit for the NHS.

Mum Jane Douglas revealed on Facebook: “Lily and I have decided in honour of today’s sad news about Sir Captain Tom - Lily, who has not walked since last year - is determined to take a few steps on her frame and push through in order to raise much needed money for the NHS.

“There are departments so strapped for money. Let’s give them some help, every £1 counts if that’s all you can afford great, if more, even better.”

Talented dancer Lily has already smashed her fundraising target of £500 before she even takes her steps.

Speaking to the PA, Jane said Lily hoped to be back at physio next week so she could start working on completing her challenge.

She added: “We hope to raise lots of money and have been blown away that she has beaten her target in less than a day.

“She is getting stuck into her physio and we are so happy to give something back to the wonderful NHS.

“Lily loved watching Captain Sir Tom and he really inspired her to raise money for the NHS.”

A JustGiving page has been set up for anyone wanting to support Lily and Jane said they

Douglas wants to do her part to help raise money for NHS charities will keep people updated on her progress.

St John’s Academy pupil Lily was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma when she was nine. After undergoing intensive treatment, she was given the all-clear in 2018, but her family then got the devastating news the cancer had returned to her lungs.

Because of her condition, she has been unable to see many family and friends during the pandemic and also suffered a stroke.

She is currently taking part in a new clinical trial at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.
