FM casts doubt on finishing date for A9 work

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has admitted the 2025 completion date for dualling the A9 is“ambitious”.

The PA reported on Tuesday that the project to dual the road between Perth and Inverness could be under threat, although work on the Luncarty to Pass of Birnam section is expected to be completed this year.

And on Wednesday, at first minister’s questions, Ms Sturgeon admitted COVID has had an impact in the project.

Responding to a question from Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro on the A9 and A96 projects, she said:“I agree that the proposals are ambitious, but I have set out the progress and our intentions.”

Ms Sturgeon added:“As everybody knows, such projects involve complex and at times lengthy planning and statutory processes that have to be undertaken, not least because it is important that local residents get the chance to have their say on the design and that any objections or concerns are taken into account and, where possible, addressed.

“Clearly, as is the case with almost every facet of life right now, COVID has had an impact on the projects, and we will need to consider exactly what that impact will be going forward. I have set out the significant progress on the A9 and where we are with the A96 plans. We will continue to progress those as quickly as possible.”

After the first minister’s statement, Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said he had written to the transport secretary looking for reassurance on the project.

Mr Fraser said:“It would be a massive blow for those of us who have campaigned for the dualling of the A9 between Perth and Inverness to be told that the project is either on hold or may face delays in reaching its targeted completion date.”
