Mark and team continue to make great improvements on the ice

Perthshire curler Mark Watt is noticing big improvements on numerous fronts.

The 21-year-old from Auchterarder has been able to continue training and competing as part of British Curling’s performance programme.

A member of Team Craik, Watt won bronze at the World Junior Curling Champs in Krasnoyarsk, Russia last year.

And while this season has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he has worked hard to build the positive momentum further.

“The season has been good despite the current circumstances,”saidWatt.

“We have really made the best out of the situation and with all the hard work we’ve put in we have noticed big improvements individually and as a team.

“It’s been really beneficial to be in the British Curling programme, to be training four-five times a week on ice during the COVID pandemic has really helped us to continue to improve.

“Playing events over the last few months has been crucial to stay involved with competitive curling.

“Coming up against Team Mouat, Team Paterson and Team Whyte in all of these competitions has really shown us the level we need to achieve before we step up into men’s next season.”

This week represented a slight change in the schedule with the British Curling Mixed

Doubles Elite Finals. Watt teamed-up with Kinross curler Beth Farmer.

“This week has been great,” he said.“It has been a nice challenge to play mixed doubles for a change.

“We were pretty happy overall, we got a couple of big wins at the start of the week but it was a really tight and competitive competition.”

Moving forward, a step up to men’s curling is not too far away for Team Craik.

Watt added:“The plan right now is to continue to improve and develop as a team and to also make a strong step up into men’s next season.

“I’m really excited for what the future holds and hopefully looking forward to getting more competitions here and abroad next year.”
