Drunken attack left man scarred for life

- COURT REPORTER

Birthday celebrations turned to violence in the early hours, leaving the victim of a drinkfuelled glass attack scarred for life.

Perth Sheriff Court heard that Kyle Brownfield received a two-centimetre-long scar behind his right ear, along with several smaller scars.

He was initially taken by ambulance to Perth Royal Infirmary and then transferred to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, for observation because he had sustained a head injury.

His attacker, 22-year-old Kyle Allan, who was living in Firbank Road at the time, was given a community payback order when he appeared for sentence this week.

He will have to carry out 275 hours of unpaid work within the next year.

Reminding him the order was a“direct alternative”to prison, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis warned: “That gives you an indication of what is likely to happen if you don’t perform the work.”

Allan admitted striking Mr Brownfield on the head with a glass and repeatedly punching him on the head, to his injury and permanent disfigurement, at a flat in Perth’s Riggs Road on October 13, 2019.

Depute fiscal Michael Sweeney said the incident took place about 5.40am.

Those present were all consuming alcohol in the living room when there was a “disagreement.”

Mr Brownfield went to the kitchen and the accused followed him, with a glass in his hand.

A glass was heard to smash and Mr Brownfield shouted: “Stop, stop.”

The victim was seen lying on the floor - and the accused punching him on the head.

“The pair were separated,” added the fiscal.

The court was told that Mr Brownfield and Allan, who had a cut to one of the fingers on his left hand, were taken to hospital.

Police attended at A&E around 6.50am and observed that the accused had a temporary bandage on his middle finger and blood on his clothing and hands.

Mr Brownfield’s injuries were glued shut.

Solicitor Billy Somerville told the court on Wednesday:“He recognises his actions were wrong and he’s deeply ashamed.”

He now had his own tenancy, as well as a part-time job, and had managed to abstain from alcohol since the assault.
