New South Street takeaway agreed
A Perth pizzeria has failed to persuade city planners to prevent a company adding another takeaway to the dozen or so already selling food on or around South Street.
La Casa Pizzeria lodged an official objection to Doreva Property Company’s application to convert a vacant office formerly used by Swinton Insurance into a new eatery saying it would “overcrowd the area”.
A supporting document sent to PKC along with the application listed almost a dozen different takeaways already trading in the area including Dr Noodles, Himalaya Indo-Bangla
Takeaway, Cafe Bodrum, Domino’s Pizza, Mae Ping Thai Dining and Elrasheed Takeaway.
La Casa Pizzeria said of the latest proposal: “The street already has a number of hot food premises, adding another would overcrowd the street and would be out of character with the area.
“The parking is limited on the street, which is a main bus route into the centre. Customers, delivery drivers and goods deliveries would generate a high level of traffic on a road lacking parking/loading and turning space.
“The development would cause an increase in noise, disturbance and smells in a densely populated street, surrounded by residential properties.”
But a PKC planning official ruled: “The proposed use would not conflict with the vitality and viability of the city centre. It is acknowledged that there is a need for hot food takeaway uses and town/neighbourhood centres are an appropriate place for these to be located.”
The unnamed official approved the application subject to seven conditions including one requiring any new occupier of the property to install an“effective”ventilation system “such that cooking odours are not exhausted into or escape into any neighbouring buildings”.
