Drawings of Crannog museum revealed

- MELANIE BONN

The first drawings have been shown of how the new £12 million Crannog museum to be built at Dalerb will look.

A public consultation by the Scottish Crannog Centre in Kenmore has begun during which in the coming weeks the opinions of Highland Perthshire residents will be canvassed to ensure the exciting project is of benefit to all.

The process was kick-started with a public Zoom meeting on Thursday night. During this, the Scottish Crannog Centre shared the architects drawing of a new expanded site on the opposite shore of Loch Tay to where the award-winning visitor attraction is currently sited.

It will mean the interpretation of the human settlement that existed there 2500 years ago can enjoy a quieter spot away from the marina and holiday development which has sprung up around the existing centre which is a short distance from popular visitor destination, Kenmore.

Plans are being developed for a “locally, regionally and nationally significant”museum and visitor centre plus three new reconstructions of stilted loch dwellings, to be accessed on wooden causeways from Dalerb public car park.

This is the location for a crannog ‘village’to reflect the community life of Iron Age loch dwellers.

Community archaeologist and event coordinator Rachel Backshall explained: “The Crannog Centre aims to create an organisation where a thousand fingerprints and a thousand voices are involved in all we do – a national treasure rooted in its community.

“This process of community consultation will be an on-going conversation throughout the development.”

Scottish Crannog Centre managing director Mike Benson said:“We really want to hear from people, we are here to listen and learn.

“I encourage people to get in touch, and have a conversation around this exciting development.”
