Perth Doo’cot captain Rory Pennycook was pleased with the top order batting display in last weekend’s friendly with Meigle.

The weather halted action early but a positive stint with the bat had Perth sitting on 44-2 when play was brought to a close.

While only a brief appearance, Pennycook witnessed plenty of positives to take into a busy upcoming return to competitive cricket.

“We only got about 11 overs in all told,”said the Doo’cot skipper.

“But it was good to get back into a game setting and get ourselves back into a competitive frame of mind.

“I felt our top order showed a lot of positives on Saturday - especially against quality opposition - and had built a solid platform for us to push on in the remaining 30 overs.

“To be scoring at four an over and to only be two wickets down against the quality Meigle have in their bowling attack is really pleasing.

“The two wickets we lost were to good deliveries and we didn’t have batsmen throwing their wickets away.”

Doo’cot, who have been putting the hard work in at nets practice, soon return to league and cup competition.

A Caley Region T20 cup match against Forfarshire 1st XI is on the schedule for next Tuesday before the first game of the league season will see Falkland travel to Perth on May 22 - the same day as St Johnstone’s Scottish Cup final.

Pennycook said:“It’s a tough first weekend, but we’re really looking forward to getting back to competitive action for the first time in nearly two years.

“Falkland are always a tough opponent and are one of the stronger teams in the league so we’re going to have to be at our best to get something out of it.

“But we have a strong side this year and have had a good pre-season so far so we fancy our chances, although I think a couple of us may be a bit distracted by a certain event at Hampden!”

The following day Doo’cot are on their travels in the first round of the Scottish Cup. East Kilbride provide the opposition.

“East Kilbride, we know less about, but from what I’ve heard, they’re not a team to be taken lightly,” Pennycook explained.

“The western leagues are very strong so we know we’ll have to be at our best again.

“Nets have had a really good buzz about them recently.”
