New calls for tribute to former councillor

-

Renewed support has been given for a part of the new Perth High School to be named after the late Cllr Bob Band.

The popular SNP Perth City South councillor played a key role in kicking off the project as both local councillor and convener of the lifelong learning committee.

Last year councillors unanimously supported plans to name part of the school after him in tribute.

Earlier this week it was confirmed plans for the new school had been submitted to Perth and Kinross Council.

And SNP Perth City South councillor Sheila McCole has called for a tribute to Cllr Band to be included.

She said: “I am thrilled to see the progress that has been made with the new Perth High School.

“This project was the brainchild of the late SNP councillor Bob Band and I know he would be ecstatic to see it progress.

“There was previous cross-party support for the assembly hall or auditorium in the new Perth High School to be named after Bob and I can think of no more fitting tribute.”

The idea was initially proposed at a meeting of full council in September 2020 by Independent Highland Perthshire councillor Xander McDade.

Conservative council leader Cllr Murray Lyle told councillors he had “absolutely no hesitation” in progressing this request.

Cllr Band - described by many as a “gentleman” - died in March 2020.

During his time as an elected member he was convener of PKC’s lifelong learning committee deciding on educational issues in Perth and Kinross.

Current convener Conservative councillor Caroline Shiers told the PA: “I am delighted to support the recognition of the contribution Bob Band made to Perth City South and also the work he did whilst convener of the lifelong learning committee.

“I served as a member of the committee whilst Bob was convener and I know how passionate he was about improving education across Perth and Kinross.”
