Perth street has blue bins removed in clampdown

Breach of guidelines leads to action

- KATHRYN ANDERSON

Residents on a Perth street have had their recycling bins removed after continually putting the wrong rubbish in them, says the council.

Perth and Kinross Council recently clamped down on contaminated waste placed in blue-lidded bins.

But after residents on Ballantine Place apparently continued to re- offend PKC took the decision to confiscate blue bins.

We told you last week that the council was fined £100,000 over the past year for presenting contaminated waste.

Blue- lidded bins with non- recyclable contents were issued with red labels and left unemptied by refuse workers.

But households in Ballantine Place - said to be littered with issues - have their bins removed.

One resident said: “Blue bins were removed from Ballantine Place a few weeks ago because a few can’t follow the rules.”

Perth and Kinross Council this week confirmed it had stoppped the recycling service in Perth’s Ballantine Place.

A PKC spokesperson said: “There has been an on-going issue with householders on Ballantine Place in Perth contaminating bins and leaving bins/waste on the street. “A decision was made to withdraw the blue bin service after several attempts were made to improve the situation, although this remains under review.”

PKC has said a Ballantine Place resident can get their bin back provided they put a lock on it and do not leave it on the street.

The spokesperson said: “If any householder would like a blue bin, they can request to have one returned on the understanding that they are solely responsible for it, making sure it isn’t left onstreet, and that they lock it to prevent neighbours or any passers-by misusing it.”

On the general issue of recycling contamination, the council added: “We are undertaking a range of initiatives to increase recycling and reduce contamination rates based around educating residents, and these are already showing results. The ongoing support of householders for these measures is something we greatly appreciate, and working together with them in a concerted effort we can resolve the issue.

“This approach also links in with our focus for 20212022, to further reduce, reuse and recycle waste produced in our communities. As a council we are committed to tackling the climate change emergency, and actions such as reducing food waste will be included climate change action plan.”
