Eve looks to golden future on world stage

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Perthshire amateur football results from Saturday, March 19: Division One - Kettins 1 Vale of Earn 7. Division Two Auchterarder 2 Balmoral 1, Fair City 9 Kinrossie 0, Stanley 1 Ballinluig 4. Smith League Cup - Breadalbane 1 Jeanfield Swifts 6. North of Tay Cup - Fintry 1 Rattray 1 (Fintry win on penalties).

It’s been a whirlwind couple of months and of course including that Olympic success in Beijing.

But Eve Muirhead is focused on adding further gold to the CV when she competes in the World Mixed Doubles Championships in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Perthshire curler will team-up with Bobby Lammie to represent Scotland from April 23-30.

They booked their ticket to the world stage following a title-winning performance in Perth at the recent Scottish Mixed Doubles event.

“Having Olympic medals will definitely help us as we go into another major event this season,” Muirhead said.

“I think as curlers that is why you play, to be involved in the big events and for Bobby and me this is the first opportunity to play at the World Mixed Doubles.

“We’re both really looking forward to playing.”

Muirhead could become the first British player to claim a full set of major titles in the same season, having also won the European Championships with her women’s team.

“We’re delighted to have the chance to play with Scotland on our backs again,” she said.

“It would mean the world to claim another medal. It’s something that hasn’t been done before and it’s another chance for us to get another medal and complete a triple.”

Muirhead continued: “Geneva’s somewhere that I’ve never curled in before and it’s nice that it will just be a little hop on a flight and not travelling across to the other side of the world.

“We’ll look to have some good preparation leading into it and we’ve then got The Players Championships.

“You can’t get much better preparation than playing against some of the best players in the world.”

Lammie is determined to help his playing partner complete her set of gold medals.

“Eve’s won just about everything there is apart from this, so we’ll do our best and hopefully add this to our collections,” he said.

Meanwhile, Scotland were this week forced to pull out of the women’s World Curling Championships in Canada due to Covid-19 problems.

The Scots had been fielding a threemember team since the event got under way on March 19 after skip Rebecca Morrison and alternate Fay Henderson had tested positive ahead of the event.

Further daily testing has now resulted in two more positive cases.

Following the initial positive cases, Kinross curler Beth Farmer had received a late call-up and had quickly travelled to the event in Prince George, but will now not be able to take part in the championships.

A statement noted: “All team members are being fully supported at this time and we would like to extend our particular thanks to Beth Farmer having travelled to Canada at short notice while the event was already underway in a bid to help Scotland compete.

“Arrangements are currently underway to organise the team’s return to Scotland as soon as it is safe and possible for them to do so.”
