Police probing ‘sickening’ Queen’s Bridge vandalism

- KATHRYN ANDERSON

Police are appealing for information after Queen’s Bridge in Perth was vandalised while it was lit blue and yellow in support of the people of Ukraine.

A Perth City Centre councillor has condemned the vandalism as “sickening”.

Officers believe the incident occurred between noon on Friday, March 11 and 8am on Monday, March 21.

Several bridge light fixtures, with reinforced glass, were smashed.

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council said: “This is a deplorable act of vandalism, made more so as the lights were blue and yellow in support of Ukraine.”

Constable Callum Gibson said: “This is a malicious act of vandalism and it will take time for the lights to be replaced.

“I am appealing to anyone who has any information or knowledge regarding this crime to contact us.”

Lib Dem councillor Peter Barrett said he received reports of damage to the uplighters installed in the ground to illuminate the tunnel - which passes under the Queen’s Bridge connecting Rodney Gardens to Norie Miller Walk.

Cllr Barrett reported the damage to Police Scotland as well as PKC’s Community Safety and Greenspace teams after local residents and heather garden volunteers reported the damage to him.

Cllr Barrett said: “Someone has smashed all the uplighters. These had heavy duty, thick and toughened safety glass covers which have all been shattered. The vandals would have needed a hammer or heavy object to cause the damage. The sickening thing is that whoever did this has deliberately gone round every single lamp and destroyed each in turn. Words fail me.”

Cllr Barrett echoed the police appeal for information.
