Bakes, seeds and sport part of school’s fundraising day
On Friday, March 25, the whole of a Perthshire school community took part in a fundraising day to support Ukraine.
All money raised by events at Breadalbane Academy will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine
Humanitarian Appeal to assist their efforts in supporting Ukraine.
They held a non-uniform day with a theme ‘Dress Blue and Yellow’. Parents made a suggested £2 donation for each pupil to ditch their school tie and dress in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
Breadalbane also held a bake sale and a volleyball match pitching staff v pupils.
There were donations taken at the door for anyone coming in to spectate at the match.
Younger pupils in registration classes planted sunflower seeds.
Once established on classroom windowsills, the seedlings will be planted out in May. For anyone wondering why grow a sunflower, they are the national flower of Ukraine.
Head teacher John Devine said: “We were absolutely delighted by the contribution of staff, pupils and parents to our Ukraine Day.
“It has been difficult for communities in the UK to watch helplessly as the dreadful events unfold in Ukraine. As a school community, it was really empowering to feel that we could help the people of Ukraine in our own small way.
“The idea for our fundraising day came from some staff in our secondary department who wanted our school to do something practical to support those suffering in Ukraine.
“As we had also had representations from the Parent Council and a number of pupils along the same lines, we felt that this would be an ideal whole school event.
“I want to thank those secondary staff in particular for doing a huge amount of organisation, at a very busy time of year, to ensure the day was successful.”
