Pupils add voices to special peace message

- MELANIE BONN

A Perthshire school had an action packed day of thoughtful activities for Ukraine including joining in a song recording with hundreds of young voices from across the world.

Abernyte Primary School held a Ukraine fundraiser on Monday, March 28 which saw £172.42 collected which will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Appeal.

Head teacher Jennifer Clark said the day centred around“fun activities, stories and a focus on modelling and encouraging compassion and sharing experiences of kindness.”

“The young people had discussions about the war using clips from BBC Newsround clips to inspire them,”she added.

“One of the parents kindly donated 10‘Be My Bear’teddies which the children assembled and stuffed with love and messages on doves of kindness.

“These teddies will be sent to Poland from Morris Leslie for children refugees.

“They planted sunflowers Ukraine’s national flower - and will monitor which grows tallest.

“This plant is an emblem of optimism for its hardiness, it has been adopted as a symbol of solidarity.”

And she continued:“Ukraine’s own blue and yellow flag is said to resemble a blue, clear sky looming over a thriving field of crops.

“Our hope was that the sense of doing something, no matter how small, will bring great comfort.”

They made a brilliant range of necklaces, bracelets and hair clasps all in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

Then they recorded everyone singing lines of John Lennon’s song‘Imagine’which will be joined with other voices from around the world, part of the ‘Voices of the World’choir project.

The final edited together song will see the Perthshire children’s contribution shared across social media.
