Kids have all the right answers with return of rotary school quiz

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

Crieff Rotarians welcomed the return of the club’s popular primary school quiz recently.

The event was held at Strathearn Community Campus and featured 12 teams from six local schools.

Youngsters from Crieff Primary, Morrison’s Academy and St Dominic’s RC Primary all took part, joined by teams from Comrie, Madderty and Muthill primary schools.

The teams, drawn separately from the P6 and P7 classes at each school, were competing for the Ross-bell Quaich and a chance to take part in the area final, which is to be held in Blairgowrie.

Demonstrating its green credentials, Crieff Rotary used the quiz prepared for its 2020 competition and for which all the paperwork had been printed just two days before the event had to be cancelled because of the looming Covid-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions.

Callum Macleod, the club’s executive secretary, carefully stored all the paperwork for the next three years and was happy to bring it out again for the 2023 competition.

The quiz comprised 10 different rounds of six questions each. And, after a closelyfought battle, the final results found Crieff Primary’s P7 team on top with 93 points out of a possible 120.

Joint second place was taken by Morrison’s Academy’s P7 team and Madderty’s P6 one with 89 points.

Fourth place went to Morrison’s Academy’s P6 team with 88 points, a mere one behind their older colleagues.

Overall the P6 teams from all six schools amassed a total of 463 points between them, compared to 421 achieved by the P7 teams.

The Ross-bell Quaich was presented to the winning team by Rotary president Chris Dowse.

Callum said: “Nobody else knew what was in the quiz, which was just as well because two Rotarians had grandsons taking part that evening but could tell them absolutely nothing in advance.

“A little amusing aside was the chuckle caused to the team of six Rotarian scorers when, in response to the question: ‘What B is a person who studies plants?’ One team wrote a ‘bottomist’. We awarded them a single point for both amusing us and for being nearly right!

“Well done to all the young people involved and congratulations to the winners.”
