Cammy couldface County

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

St Johnstone midfielder Cammy Macpherson is being monitored after missing the weekend’s Aberdeen defeat through injury.

Macpherson, who has performed admirably this term in the middle of the park, was completely absent from the Perth team-sheet on Saturday afternoon.

Yesterday manager Callum Davidson confirmed, however, the 24-year-old could well be in the running for the club’s next fixture – the visit of second from bottom Ross County.

“Cammy hasn’t trained properly for weeks so we decided he couldn’t play against Aberdeen,” said Davidson, who has been delighted with Macpherson’s partnership with Dan Phillips this season.

“He’s had a few problems with his ankle and shin, so we have been monitoring it.

“Hopefully we’ve got to the bottom of it and we’ll have him ready for the game this weekend.”

Saints are licking their wounds after going down

He made his 350th appearance for the club on Saturday – and David Wotherspoon hopes there are many more to come. The St Johnstone stalwart, who has lifted three major pieces of silverware in Perth colours, is out of contract at the end of the season.

When quizzed if he is keen to stay, the 33-year-old said: “Of course. I’ve enjoyed my time here. I enjoy playing here and working under the gaffer.

“I hope he enjoys working with me and we can continue that. We have a great bunch of boys and it would be great to stay.

“I’ve been here for 10 years so it would be difficult to see [myself ] somewhere else.” Wotherspoon added: “I’ve just got to wait and see what happens. Hopefully I can get something sorted.” Synonymous with so many highs in a Saints jersey, Wotherspoon has mainly been forced to settle for a spot on the bench since returning from the World Cup.

He was back in from the start for the 1-0 Mcdiarmid Park defeat against Aberdeen.

“It was such a high being at the World Cup,” Wotherspoon said.

“Coming back into the league fixtures was difficult for the first couple of weeks.

“But it was back to work and I tried to keep my head down and work hard, which I always do.

“We have a strong squad so it is hard to get back in.

“It has been difficult for me – frustrating at times – but I’ve just tried to do as much as I can in training. When I come on the pitch, I try to do my best for the team.

“I think it had been the longest time where I’ve not been involved from the start.”

1-0 against Aberdeen on Saturday.

Andy Considine was ordered off in just the sixth minute following striker Bojan Miovski hitting the deck at the edge of the box.

“I have watched it back numerous times and there’s no doubt it’s really soft,” Davidson said.

“Andy has got on the wrong side and Miovski has been really clever, so the referee has had a decision to make.

“Was there much of a difference between that and Liam Scales pushing Stevie May? I’d have to figure out exactly what the ref gave Andy’s one for because if it’s for the hand, he’s hardly touched him.

“Scales had two hands on Stevie’s back inside the box and pushed him over, but that wasn’t even looked at.

“Everyone knows that inconsistency is a big thing.

“I was in favour of VAR and haven’t changed my mind on it, but we are giving penalties far too easily in games. They’re being awarded for very small, insignificant incidents.

“Obviously the refs are still learning the system and getting used to it, but what we’re finding is what’s a foul, a penalty or a red card in one game isn’t in another.

“Each game seems to be being reffed differently. That’s the inconsistency people are getting frustrated at.

“We will always have these discussions in football but we have to make it better.”

That is now three red cards in six games for the Perth side but Davidson does not feel there is a discipline problem.

He said: “Having three red cards in six games has really impacted us so we have to make sure it stops.

“I believe it has been harsh because two of them I would dispute – and then add in Nicky Clark’s against Rangers too – but we have to make better decisions ourselves.

“Obviously we are looking for better decisions from officials but we have to help ourselves too.”
