New school’s opening date will be revealed‘in near future’
Perth and Kinross Council will announce the opening date of Perth’s newest primary school“in the near future”.
Riverside Primary School – a merger between North Muirton PS and Balhousie PS – was due to open immediately after the Easter holidays but its opening has been delayed until the finishing touches are made to Scotland’s first Passivhaus primary school.
This week councillors agreed to a temporary bike and scooter storage area until permanent shelters can be erected on the site of the North Muirton Primary School building which is next to Riverside PS.
In March, Perth and Kinross Council revealed the opening had been pushed back to some time“prior to the summer holidays”.
This week a council spokeswoman said:“the new opening date will be confirmed in the near future.”
Due to the delay, councillors were this week asked to approve a minor amendment to two planning conditions. The conditions called for the provision of shelters for at least 94 bikes and 30 scooters to be in place prior to the school being used. Councillors were asked to agree to a temporary storage area being provided in the interim.
It was put before Perth and Kinross Council’s Planning and Placemaking Committee for consideration on Wednesday, April 19 and recommended for approval.
The proposed permanent cycle and scooter parking will be located on the site of the existing North Muirton Primary School building – now scheduled to be demolished over the summer holidays.
Team Leader (Major Applications and Enforcement) Sean Panton explained: “The plan is to keep the existing school operational until such time as the new school opens. This therefore means it is not possible to provide the scooter and cycling parking facilities in time for the new school opening.”
He added:“it is now proposed to have temporary arrangements in place until such times as a permanent scheme can be erected following the demolition of the former building.”
The proposal was unanimously approved by councillors.
The new school – built in the grounds of North Muirton Primary – will incorporate the nursery, primary and an assisted support needs section. It has been built to an environmentally friendly Passivhaus standard.
