New project will be a big PLUS for community
Ropemaking workshops and historical talks
The vision for a ‘People’s Place’ in Ropemakers Close will be unveiled by Perth charity PLUS on May 4.
In the pipeline is an exciting community heritage project.
During the process of purchasing the former Ropemakers Close public toilets, which are to be converted into the People’s Place community building, the fascinating history of the area became known to PLUS Perth.
An opportunity was seen to undertake a project not only of benefit to the members of PLUS Perth – many have had difficult life experiences – but one that would be of interest and value to the people of Perth and visitors to the city.
A lovely restful community garden nearby on Horners Lane has already been established by the charity.
The ‘Ropemakers Close and Horners Lane History Project’, has been conceived by PLUS supporter, Dr Paul Philippou, Honorary Research Fellow in history at the University of Dundee.
Dr Philippou said: “The site is located in a rich archaeological and historical area just off South Street in Perth.
“One of the main activities of the project will be ropemaking workshops and finding out about the industrial heritage within the area.
“The project will involve undertaking guided research in Perth Museum, the AK Bell Library, Perth and Kinross Archives and with local archaeologists and historians who will deliver talks, undertake workshops and activities linked to the area’s history, and ultimately design and commission information boards.”
PLUS intends to delve into the past with the help of the local business.
The charity has already met with a nearby shop, Banks of Perth, a former city rope merchants, with a heritage reaching back to the 19th century.
PKC Community Interest and Perth Common Good Fund and The Rotary Club of Perth have generously supported the project.
Susan Scott, manager of PLUS, said: “The project will help reignite the passions of some PLUS Perth members to be involved in cultural and community projects and to find new purpose and a new sense of belonging after experiencing difficult periods in their lives. It is part of the wider work being undertaken by PLUS Perth to improve Horners Lane and Ropemakers Close, the project is one aspect of this work which will benefit the inhabitants of Perth and contribute to the regeneration.”
The member-led charity is presently crowdfunding to pay for the transformation of the disused building in Ropemakers Close.
