Iconic rally comes to Perthshire

-

Scotland’s longest historic endurance regularity car rally - the iconic Scottish Malts - will set off and finish in Perthshire with a strong entry from around the world.

The 18th “Malts” will see motors from the 1930s to 70s cover 1000 miles of the country’s best driving roads between April 23 and 28.

This year’s rally is based at Gleneagles Hotel and, from the start, crews head southwest to circle south of Loch Lomond and into Argyll before the first overnight halt in Oban.

Leg two passes along the Great Glen and Loch Ness before the first of two nights in Inverness.

A route through Easter and Wester

Ross makes up leg three, while leg four sees the rally heading into the Spey Valley and Cairngorms, back to Perthshire and Pitlochry.

The rally’s final leg takes competitors via the Tay Forest Park and Strathmore before looping around Perth and heading to Gleneagles via the Ochil Hills.

The rally’s oldest car is a 1931 Bentley Le Mans Open Tourer from Germany, followed by a British entered 1938 Frazer Nash and car three is another Bentley, a 1948 version from Holland.

Also in the top 10 is a 1958 Aston Martin from Argentina and a 1964 Porsche from Germany.

Crews taking part in a range of historic marques, from Sunbeam and Triumph to Aston Healey and Jaguar, are coming from as far away as Australia, France, Switzerland, Belgium, the USA and New Zealand.

The Kiwi driver is Bron Burrell, who will be re-united with the Austin Maxi she drove on the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally.

And car 11 will be upholding Scottish honours.

A 1966 Volvo Amazon 132, specially built for endurance regularity rallying, it is crewed by husband-and-wife George and Rosalind Topp.
