Win at St Andrews boosts confidence

Hard work over winter sets up tournament triumph

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Keeping mistakes to a minimum was what pleased Perth golfer Daniel Young most in his early season tournament triumph.

Young played his way to title success by producing two impressive rounds of golf on the Big Johnson’s Tour in St Andrews this month.

A score of 68 around the Jubilee course was followed up by a 67 at the Castle course to finish two clear of secondplaced Calum Fyfe.

The Big Johnson’s Tour was introduced to provide competitive playing opportunities for golf professionals across Scotland.

“It was nice to play well and put a couple of decent rounds together,” Young told the PA.

“There were some really good players in the field and I can definitely take some confidence from beating them.

“I played well over the two days which was pleasing and I didn’t make many mistakes.

“One of the days – the first round – it was blowing pretty heavily and that made it tough.

“The second day was fairly calm but, around The Castle course, anything is possible.

“Putting together a couple of good scores with minimal mistakes was what pleased me most.”

Having put the hard work in over the winter months, Young feels well-placed to attack 2023.

“Last week and potentially the next Big Johnson’s Tour event are warm-up events to get a card in my hand and get ready for the season ahead,” Young explained.

“The game has been feeling pretty good. I feel the work I’ve been doing over the winter is coming to fruition.

“I’ve been playing a lot in the last couple of weeks and trying to put some scores together.

“It has been pleasing to get
