Distance no object as Jordan revels in title win

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

He has clocked up hundreds of miles on the road across the campaign.

But Saturday afternoon’s title delight makes it all worthwhile for Perth footballer Jordan Northcott.

Northcott, who previously plied his trade with St Johnstone, played his part as Brechin City defeated Buckie Thistle 2-0 in the Highland League title decider.

“Midweek games I would be leaving at 3pm in the afternoon and getting home at 1.30am in the morning,”he said of his journey this season.“then you are working the next day.

“The away games can take up your whole Saturday as well so it is not easy. But it is definitely worth it. It is 100 per cent worth it.”

Northcott (21), who coaches with Perth-based Be the Best Football Academy, was utilised as an early second half substitute on Saturday when the game was locked at 0-0.

“I was a bit nervous because you don’t get many days where it comes down to the final day,”he explained to the PA.“BUT when we got there it was all focus on the game.

“Coming on I knew I had to make some sort of impact.

“On the way up we were talking about scoring a late winner and imagining how it would feel.”

Loudon, a fellow former St Johnstone player, struck in the 86th minute.

Northcott smiled:“in training every week Ewan is hitting shots from outside the box and they are going in. Every week in matches we are telling him to hit it because he always gets the chances.

“I’m so glad he decided to hit the one on Saturday!

“The feeling when the ball went in the back of the net was something I’ve never felt in my life. I then just remember loads of folk running on the pitch.

“Before we got the second goal it was just about defending and getting the ball in their half.

“Everyone is still buzzing. I’m still buzzing.

“Every footballer’s dream is to win a league title. No matter how high a standard it is, you still get the same feeling.”

Ahead of this weekend’s play-off first leg against Lowland League champs Spartans, Northcott said: “Everyone at Brechin really wants to get back into League Two so we will be putting everything into the game.

“For me, sometimes you need to take a step back to take two forward. If I could get back into the leagues, that would be perfect.”
