Course benefits from ‘mini-boom’

100th new season ticket holder welcomed in great time for golf

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

The North Inch Golf Course has started the year with a spring in its step - by welcoming its 100th new season ticket holder.

And Niall Mcgill, the municipal facility’s golf course officer, is looking forward to building further on the membership on the back of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Niall, a well-known figure in golfing circles, believes the sport has been going through a “mini boom” and he hopes that trend continues.

“It was great to reach our 100th new season ticket holder and this has been done in a record time this year,” he explained to the PA.

“As a public golf course, North Inch is an attractive option for people wanting to get into the sport and also for those returning after a period away.

“On the back of the Covid pandemic, golf has been going through a mini boom, with so many people realising the physical and mental health benefits of getting outdoors and taking exercise.

“Golf is almost unique amongst sports, where any age or ability can play together and enjoy social interaction at the same time.

“We had wondered whether the demand for golf would drop once things got back to normal, but this has not been the case. If anything, participation is continuing to grow.”

Niall said the historic North Inch course is “incredibly important” for the city of Perth and indeed the wider region.

He added: “Public municipal golf is extremely important for the growth and development of the sport.

“It offers affordable and accessible access to the sport and this is highlighted by the over 100 junior golfers that have season tickets at North Inch.

“We can now boast one of the best conditioned golf courses in the area, due to the hard work of our small but dedicated green keeping team. The improvements to the golf course and subsequent positive word of mouth promotion continue to help us grow.”

Niall, who owns Noah’s Ark Golf Centre, went on to add: “I played quite a lot of golf at North Inch during the mid to late 1980s and the golf course was always in fantastic condition, with greens as good as any in the area.

“Our aim is to have the course’s reputation back to where it was then.”
