A Rattray-based man who organised a walk of the Cateran Trail has raised an incredible £18,000 for Myeloma UK.

Father of four Andrew Millington (42) was diagnosed with myeloma – a rare form of incurable blood cancer – two years ago during the Covid pandemic.

He decided to walk the 64-mile route with a group of around 40 friends and supporters to raise funds for the Edinburgh-based charity which is the only nationwide charity advocating for myeloma patients.

What a perfect weekend! I’m so lucky to be able to walk this kind of distance thanks to medical research Andrew Millington

The walk took place over three days, starting in Blairgowrie on Friday, April 21, and finishing back in the east Perthshire town with a ceilidh at the Angus Hotel on Sunday, April 23, which was

open to everyone.

Andrew told the Blairie: “What a perfect weekend!

“Firstly I’m so lucky to be able to walk this kind of distance thanks to medical research.

“Secondly we had wonderful weather, company and food stations with terrific home baking how could I not go on?

“Thirdly if this helps anybody that is unfortunate enough to be diagnosed I will be a very happy man.”

Myeloma UK aims to find

a cure for myeloma, and is dedicated to helping support myeloma patients.

Andrew’s wife, Helen, added: “We had a super weekend and are delighted to have raised more than £18,000 for Myeloma UK.

“There were around 40 walkers who took part, from near and far – one man even came over especially from Switzerland!

“People have been so generous, it is absolutely incredible what people have donated, and businesses in

Blairgowrie and Alyth have been very supportive.

“We’d like to thank everyone who walked, volunteered or supported us in any way, including our generous corporate sponsors Layer8 Ltd, CRMG, Ahead Business Consulting, Cornerstones Nursery and the A Proctor Group, as well as all the local businesses who kindly donated prizes for our raffle.

“And a special mention must go to Theo Reynolds – he’s only nine, but he and his family joined us from Moray, and Theo walked an incredible 31 miles of the Cateran Trail!”

And Andrew and Helen’s friend, Simon Rycroft – who helped organise the walk and ceilidh – said: “The enthusiasm of so many colleagues and friends in supporting the walk was heartwarming, with many who travelled from afar saying they’ll definitely be back for more!”
