Saints’ women set sights even higher after fourth place finish
The season may have just finished but St Johnstone WFC manager Jamie Reynolds feels the Perth squad has a solid platform to improve on their fourth place finish next term.
Saints were still in with a shout of bumping up to second place and securing a top-flight playoff chance heading into the last day of the campaign on Sunday.
A 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock ultimately meant a finishing spot of fourth but sights will be set high when action resumes.
Reynolds said: “The players will have a short break then back into pre-season at the end of June.
“We have made no secret that finishing fourth next season is not where we want to be.
“Our work behind the scenes over the summer will need to allow the squad the best environment in order to achieve what we want to achieve.
“We have ended this season in such a way where I feel we have a really solid platform to kick on from.”
Morgan Steedman had levelled for Saints at the weekend but neither team was able to find a winner in the latter stages of the game.
“Sunday was a really enthralling match and an exciting day to be a part of,”reynolds added.
“There was the possibility of any one of four teams securing the SWPL playoff spot and that added to the occasion.
“On the game itself, we started poorly and struggled to gain any kind of control in the match, finding ourselves 1-0 down.
“We tweaked a couple of things at half-time, but the main difference was our shift in attitude, application and the contribution of the substitutes as they entered the field of play.
“Morgan has done exceptionally well individually to create the goal and the final 30 minutes was a flurry of end-to-end chances, with a draw suiting neither us or Kilmarnock.
“It was nice to be involved in the drama of the last day, and probably fairly reflects the growth in the group over the season that we are part of those occasions.”
