Last-day action will decide first division

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Two Perthshire teams are in with a chance of being crowned East of Scotland League First Division champions tomorrow afternoon.

Second-placed Kinnoull sit just one point behind leaders Dunbar United, while Luncarty, who are fourth, are three back of the top but with a better goal difference.

Kinnoull, who defeated Lochore 1-0 on Tuesday night to keep the title dream alive, head for Preston Athletic this weekend.

“We probably just shaded the game on Tuesday night and deserved the three points,” manager Alan Cameron told the PA.

“The first half was a bit scrappy. We then asked the boys to be composed, be braver on the ball and get it knocked about as much as we could.

“I think we ramped it up a little bit, had a goal chalked off, got the goal, missed a penalty and had another couple of half chances.

“We didn’t put the game to bed and, therefore, we were hanging on towards the end.

“I’ll be honest and say we probably had a little bit of luck with Lochore missing a couple of chances.”

Cameron admits there is no point in looking elsewhere on Saturday – all his players can do is get the job done at their end.

“At the start, if you had offered us the opportunity to be in the hunt for the title going into the last game of the season, we absolutely would have grabbed it,” Cameron said.

“The boys have completely earned it throughout the course of the season with their hard work, determination and quality.

“All we can do now is focus on trying to get the three points at Preston. Dunbar obviously just need to win their home game so are clearly in the favourable position.

“We will just look to get our result, picking up the points and potentially finishing second. That would be an unbelievable achievement.”

Bleachers boss Robbie Holden knows his team are “outsiders” to make a surge for the trophy but, of course, anything can happen in football.

A trip to bottom of the table Kennoway Star Hearts is the task tomorrow.

Holden said: “The way the league has turned out is one of the most exciting I can remember.

“Four teams can win the title on the last game and I can’t remember when or if that scenario has happened before.

“In all honesty we are the outsiders given we need three other results to go our way. We are fairly relaxed about that, given what we have already achieved this season.

“Of course we want the title as well but it’s out of our hands so we just need to do our job on Saturday.

“Kennoway at home certainly won’t be easy. They will want to go out on a high at home and so we need to be at our best.

“We have slipped and dropped points when we have not got to our levels so we need to be at it on Saturday. Then who knows what happens.”

Last day fixtures at the top: Dunbar United v Camelon, Kennoway Star Hearts v Luncarty, Newtongrange Star v Glenrothes, Preston Athletic v Kinnoull.
