Euro tournament glory for Swifts

- CARLA TALBOT

Jeanfield Swifts Women’s Walking Football team were delighted secure an impressive victory the first ever Eurocopa Walking Football Tournament 2024 held in Portugal.

The group –whose ages range from 44 to 63 – were the only Scottish team in the competition, but topped the league undefeated after eight games on day one.

As well as players from Jeanfield Swifts, the team were also boosted by five players from Braehead WWFC.

They went on to stay undefeated after the final two league games on day two and won 3-2 on penalties against a strong English outfit from Cheshunt in the final after a 1-0 victory in the semi-final.

Walking Football player and committee member Karen Shepherd said: “It’s been an amazing experience for the ladies. Not bad for a ‘wee team’ from Perth.”

Jeanfield Swifts Women’s Walking Football section was established in 2022 and has gone from strength to strength.

They field two teams in the Walking Football Scotland over 40s and over 50s leagues, and also offer purely recreational sessions for participants who are not interested in the competitive game.

The section trains every Wednesday night from 7pm to 9pm at Perth Academy over the winter but will be moving to their North Inch Community Campus base from the end of March 2024.
