Two men drown in the Linn of Tummel falls

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstan­ces, however, officers have confirmed there would not appear to be any suspicious circumstan­ces.

A Police Scotland spokespers­on said: “Around 7pm on Wednesday, 17 April, we received a report of two men, aged 22 and 26 years, in the water at the Linn of Tummel waterfall.

“Emergency services attended and following searches in the area, the bodies of two men were recovered from the water.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstan­ces however there would not appear to be any suspicious circumstan­ces surroundin­g these deaths.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

The deaths of the young men have been described as “extremely tragic” by MSP Murdo Fraser.

The Conservati­ve politician for Mid Scotland and Fife said: “The identities of the two men not yet been revealed but this is an extremely tragic incident and I must express my condolence­s to the family and friends of the two men.

“We do not know any details of what happened here but this is a popular wild swimming spot, and this tragedy should remind us of the dangers of going into the water at locations such as this and emphasises the need to take care.”

The Linn of Tummel and Falls of

Tummel are popular walking areas in Perth and Kinross and are under the care of the National Trust for Scotland, which describes the area as a “picturesqu­e combinatio­n of water and woodland” where the rivers Garry and Tummel meet.

A National Trust for Scotland spokespers­on said: “We are very saddened by the news of these deaths at Linn of Tummel.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokespers­on said: “We received a call at 7.09pm hours on Wednesday 17 April to attend an incident near River Tummel, Pitlochry.

“We dispatched one ambulance and three special operations response teams (SORT) to the scene.”
