JEREMY’S TOP TEN TIPS FOR SLICK CITY SHOTS
DIM THE LIGHTS When you’re shooting at night it can be worth turning down your LCD screen’s brightness to reduce glare and help keep your night vision intact.
DO A RECCE Visit and explore your favourite cities regularly, as you’ll soon find your favourite spots, and also discover new buildings and scenes every time.
SHOOT RAW Raw files contain loads of extra exposure info, giving you additional editing options in post.
ANTICIPATE THE MOMENT When framing up with people, anticipate where they’ll go so that you can shoot at the ideal moment.
INVEST IN THE RIGHT KIT There’s no point investing money in good-quality camera bodies and lenses only to put a cheap filter on your lens. Do your kit justice and invest in goodquality peripherals.
USE THE OVERLAY GRID I often compose using the rule of thirds overlay in Live View – it’s an easy way to get a good composition.
GET INSIDER INFO If you’re shooting in a new location ask locals, like cafe and shop owners, where the best spots are.
USE PHOTO APPS Apps like PhotoPills will help you work out your timings for the golden hour, and know from which direction that the sun will be coming.
BE CHEEKY Tripods aren’t generally allowed inside churches, but it’s worth asking beforehand. Or, if you can make a reasonable donation, they may let you shoot with a tripod outside of regular opening times.
AVOID SHAKE Aim for a shutter speed that is equal to or higher than the focal length you’re shooting at – so 1/200 sec at 200mm for example.
