NEW M.ZUIKO MACRO LENS CAN OFFER UP TO 8X MAGNIFICATION
The M.Zuiko 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS Pro takes close-up to a whole new level
OM System has announced a new macro lens, the M.Zuiko 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS Pro – and it promises to be a game changer for close-up photography.
The lens boasts a 2x magnification / 2:1 reproduction ratio as standard, and because OM System / Olympus cameras use Micro Four Thirds sensors, with a 2x crop factor, that equates to 4x magnification in 35mm terms.
On top of that, the 90mm Macro can be used with the Olympus MC20 teleconverter, which doubles the magnification to 4x / 4:1 reproduction ratio; which, again, taking the 2x crop factor into consideration, technically delivers an astonishing 8x magnification / 8:1 reproduction.
While some purists might raise an eyebrow at those numbers, there’s no denying that the M.Zuiko 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS Pro gets you very, very close to tiny subjects.
The lens is effectively a successor to the fantastic Olympus M.Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 Macro, which is highly regarded but is now a little long in the tooth. And while the 90mm f/3.5 is a bit slower, it otherwise outguns its predecessor in almost every way, not least autofocus.
Supporting its ridiculous levels of magnification, the lens boasts up to seven stops of image stabilisation thanks to Sync IS technology that handshakes with the latest OM System (and Olympus) cameras. This is invaluable given its effective 180mm focal length (again, in 35mm terms), which provides a very practical working distance for shooting skittish subjects.
The lens is compact, lightweight at 453g, and IP53 weather sealed, making it the ultimate tool for field macro when paired with the OM System OM-1 or OM System OM-5. The OM System M.Zuiko 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS Pro is available to order now, priced at £1,299 / $1,499.
