Finally quit
After 20 years, I’ve decided to give up smoking, but how do I even start to break the habit? Tara, Glasgow
Stopping smoking can be difficult, as nicotine is extremely addictive. If you’re finding stopping smoking difficult, then your pharmacist can help. It has been proven that combining Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) with one-to-one support increases your chance of quitting by up to four times more than if you go it alone. All Lloyds Pharmacy stores offer free Stop Smoking advice. We can provide advice on boosting willpower and how to avoid triggers, tips for controlling your cravings and guidance on managing withdrawal symptoms.
A real pain
Ilove spending time in the garden but I’m always scratching myself or getting splinters. How do I know if it’s infected? Debbie, Portsmouth
The main symptoms of splinter infections are redness and swelling. Other symptoms include pus around the wound and minor pain when you move the finger. If you experience any of these, you could visit your pharmacist. However, it is best to avoid infection in the first place by washing the wound with soap and water. Once clean and dry, treat the area with an antiseptic cream (try Lloyds Pharmacy Antiseptic Cream, £1.04). Following this, cover the wound with a plaster.
Puffy problems
Lately I’ve been getting puffy ankles. I’m only 35 and not overweight. What might be causing it? Nina, London
Swollen ankles are usually a result of fluid retention. There could be a variety of causes including hormonal fluctuations, sitting or standing for long periods, or excess salt in the body. If this is the case, you should practise exercises with your feet when sitting and ensure you stay hydrated. Sometimes swollen ankles can be a sign of a longer term condition called lymphedema or venous insufficiency caused by blood clots. If you think this could be the cause, you should visit your GP.
