AVOID THESE TRAVEL RIP OFFS: 1 Bottled water

Buying water all the time will cost you. Rather by a 2-litre bottle from a supermarket that will last you much longer and save money in the end.

2 Airport food

Food on sale at airports is almost always overpriced. If you know you’re going to be hungry, pack your own meal.

3 I heart t-shirts

You may be in love with the city you visited, but there are plenty of more meaningful souvenirs you could be spending your money on.

4 First-class tickets

First class tickets often cost up to five times more than economy tickets. Rather save that money for your actual holiday.

5 Bed sheet buys

In some cities, vendors sell designer items on the side of the road. The prices are low, but the items are usually fake. Rather buy your designer gear from actual shops.

6 Airport currency

Most airport currency exchange kiosks charge a minimum 10% mark-up. Wait until you get to your destination and use a local cash machine there.

7 Questionable taxi drivers

If a taxi driver waves you down at the airport, just say no. Legitimate taxi drivers have to wait in the taxi queue with all the others.

8 Food you don’t order

In many restaurants abroad, you’ll be given appetisers like bread or olives. Don’t assume these are free. Additional charges are not always listed on the menu, so ask if you’re not sure.

9 Roaming data

Before you leave, check with your service provider to see what packages are available and find out how much data will cost you if you go over your limit.

10 Return it empty

If you’re hiring a car, decline the option to return your car without filling up. Otherwise the company can charge you for a full tank of petrol.
