A new discovery could explain why obese people are more likely to develop cancer. A type of cell the body uses to destroy cancerous tissue gets clogged by fat and stops working, the team from Trinity College, Dublin, found. According to Cancer Research UK, obesity is the biggest preventable cause of cancer, and more than one in 20 cancer cases in the UK are caused by excess body weight. According to the College’s Professor Lydia Lynch, there is a drug that can block fat uptake, but this is not 100 percent effective in preventing cancer. ‘The best way to prevent cancer is to lose some weight,’ she said.
