Rubbing my hands on my tummy, I winced in pain. ‘What’s up with you?’ my boyfriend David asked as we sat together on the sofa.

‘I just can’t get comfortabl­e,’ I said shuffling this way and that.

We were housesitti­ng at David’s parent’s place while they were on holiday, and ever since I’d arrived there, I just couldn’t seem to settle.

‘I’ve got this pain in my stomach,’ I told him.

It seemed to come and go, but it wasn’t too bad, so I tried my best to ignore it.

Only the night before David’s parents were due back, the pains seemed to strike again.

By now, though, it was so uncomforta­ble that I couldn’t get to sleep.

If I moved, or even tried to get comfy, I felt like my stomach was going to explode and I kept having to dash to the loo.

A friend had suggested that I might have a urine infection, and with the amount of times I was running back and forth to the loo, I suspected she was right.

‘Stacey, please stop,’ David groaned, ‘I’ve got to be up for work in the morning.’

‘Sorry,’ I said.

‘I’m just in so much pain.’ ‘Do you want me to call an ambulance?’ David asked, but I shook my head.

‘Call 111 then,’ he mumbled from beneath the duvet.

While he went downstairs to get some sleep, I called the NHS helpline for advice.

But explaining my symptoms over the phone, the operator didn’t know what was wrong.

‘A nurse will call you back within two hours,’ she said.

All I could do now was sit and wait. I went to the loo again, but
