DOUBLE TROUBLE

In the midst of the global pandemic, Sarah Curtis, 34, from Cumbria, gave birth to a UK first…

Isolating at home with my pregnant bump, I worried about the health of my expectant babies. It was the start of the global pandemic, and my husband Aaron, 32, and I were pregnant with twins.

My high levels of anxiety masked a lot of the excitement.

Aaron and I already had two children, Riock, nine, and Marcy, seven, and just two years prior, in March 2017, we had lost our five-month-old baby girl Lottie to cot death.

The pain of losing Lottie was on my mind, whilst I was forced to shield at home.

And to make matters worse, the twins had been diagnosed with a rare pregnancy condition called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).

‘You may lose them both,’ the doctor had warned me.

In June 2020, when I was just 30-weeks pregnant, I went into premature labour.

At the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, I was given drugs to stave off the babies coming, and

nurses took lots of tests.

Then days later, a doctor turned up at my bedside in full PPE.

‘I’m afraid you have tested positive for coronavirus,’ she said. I couldn’t believe it. Throughout my entire pregnancy, I had only ever left the house to go to the hospital.

I was worried about the twins, and so were doctors.

On 3 July, I waved goodbye to Aaron – who had to stay away – and went into theatre to have a caesarean.

By the time I woke up, 3lb 5oz Kenna and 3lb 1oz Lissa were already in the Special Care Unit. Both girls were immediately tested for Covid, and when the results came back, I was told they were both positive.

The first in the UK to be born with Covid!

Fate was throwing everything at us.

Incredibly, the twins and I managed to fight off the virus, and once we were all healthy, Aaron got to meet the girls.

In late August 2021, we all came home.

Now, Kenna and Lissa are eight months old and healthy and happy.

Our brave tiny twosome were no match for Covid!
