Taz Thornton, an empowerment coach, has shared her tips on how to be more grateful.
1 Morning list
Every morning, before even getting out of bed, list five things you’re grateful for. Find different ones each day – it helps to rewire the brain for a more optimistic outlook.
2 Memories
Look back over your life and think about some of the times you’ve filed as ‘negative’. Reframe them by asking what did this situation do for me?
3 Smile!
Even the physical act of forcing a smile will encourage pure happiness.
4 Write
Create a journaling habit – morning or evening. You can freewrite or invest in a gratitude journal with daily prompts.
5 Meditate
Take time for yourself, even if it’s just a few minutes to practice meditation. Focusing only on your breathing can be a starting point in learning to cut out all that mind chatter.
6 Practice mindfulness
Mindful walking can be a great way to learn being in the moment. Try to notice as much as you can, from the way the ground feels beneath your feet, to the colour of the leaves.
7 Give back
Find a way to create ‘kindfulness’ for someone else every day. A simple note, an encouraging comment or Whatsapp message, could make someone's day.
8 Check in
Take a moment to really consider the wonder of being human. How lucky really are we? Think about the brilliance of what we’ve been born into – how can we each take a moment to heal ourselves?
9 Perspective
Recognise and be grateful for all we do have, instead of obsessing over what we perceive we don’t.

Always aim to leave every place and situation more beautiful than you found it.
